Summer Nationals Takes on World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Models

 

Legends Week had its mixture of adversity both on the track and from the skies as rain hampered three out of six nights of racing on the 2018 Summer Nationals 2nd week of action. The rained out event at Spoon River Speedway (IL) was eventually run on Monday, June 25 after its original June 21 date was lost to rain, but the events at Belle-Clair and Jacksonville Speedway were canceled due to thundershowers and sustained periods of heavy showers.

Babb Holds Off Shirley for Spoon River Speedway Victory 

 

BANNER, IL — If rubbin’ is racing, Spoon River Speedway fans certainly saw plenty of racing in the final eight laps of Monday’s DIRTcar Summer Nationals main event.

 

Series points leader Shannon Babb of Moweaqua, IL, turned back a stiff challenge from Brian Shirley on a late restart to capture his tour-leading fifth victory of the season and 97th of his career with a $5,000 payday at the high-banked 3/8-mile oval.

Moyer Scores Win 98 at Fairbury American Legion Speedway

 

FAIRBURY, IL — The drumbeat for Billy Moyer’s march to 100 is getting louder and louder. The 60-year-old Hall of Famer and six-time series champion clicked off his series-leading 98th career series victory Saturday at Fairbury (IL) American Legion Speedway, using a high-side charge to rally from his ninth starting spot for a $10,000 payday on the seventh leg of this year’s month-long tour.

The DIRTcar Summer Nationals has long been home to one of the most diverse schedules in dirt track racing. Since the beginning, local Illinois tracks like Kankakee, Fairbury and Tri-City Speedway have helped develop the character of the Summer Nationals. The quarter- and 3/8-mile banked ovals have given the series a regional flair while still drawing racers from abroad.
